Tems, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, recently shared her childhood struggles, revealing how she endured criticism due to the tone of her voice.

In an insightful interview with The Cut, Tems disclosed that she refrained from speaking until the age of three. Candidly, she expressed feeling self-conscious as her voice differed from that of other girls.

“I was bullied to the point of tears and became a target of ridicule. People perceived my voice as boyish or resembling a frog, leading to the belief that it was unpleasant.”

“I often retreated into my own world. When attempting to make friends, I'd encourage them to sing my songs, noticing that other girls possessed sweet, high-pitched voices while mine resonated with a bass tone.”

It's worth recalling that Tems previously revealed that her journey into music began because she lacked friends.
