A perplexing incident unfolded in Bukwo District involving a 60-year-old Ugandan man named Samuel Maikut, who found himself in police custody following a visit to his in-laws. The purpose of the visit was to seek the hand of his beloved in marriage, a customary affair steeped in tradition, but the proceedings took an unexpected turn.
Samuel Maikut, the suitor, arrived at his in-laws’ residence without fulfilling the customary requirement of bringing a dowry, much to the shock and displeasure of the bride-to-be’s family.
In an unconventional move, Maikut informed the family that he intended to marry their daughter in a traditional manner, expecting them to bear the expenses of organizing the introduction ceremony.
The bride’s family had invested a substantial amount, totaling $1200, in preparations for the ceremony, anticipating Maikut’s arrival with the agreed-upon four cows and three goats.
However, when the eagerly awaited day arrived, Maikut showed up empty-handed, violating the terms of the agreement. Adding to the disappointment, he arrived 20 minutes behind the scheduled time of 5 pm, creating a tense atmosphere.
The bride’s family, understandably upset, interrogated Maikut regarding his failure to honor the agreement. Unfortunately, he could not provide a satisfactory explanation.
Fearing escalating tensions and a potential physical altercation, local authorities were summoned, resulting in Maikut’s arrest by the police.
Subsequently, the remorseful 60-year-old expressed regret for the unfortunate turn of events and pledged to compensate the bride’s family for the financial losses incurred due to the failed ceremony.
In his defense, Maikut shifted blame onto his organizing team, citing challenges that he failed to elaborate on. “I am sorry for what happened, but I am ready to discuss issues of compensation for the losses involved in the function,” he stated.
